As you are making a purchase decision, we suggest that you take the time to read some D90 Nikon SLR Camera reviews in order to see what other consumers have to say about the product. Here are some user reviews to help you make your shopping decision:
I bought the D90 literally one week before I headed to Africa on a safari. I was torn between the Canon Rebel XSi and the D90 but ultimately liked the ergonomics of the Nikon and thought the video feature was huge plus since I didn;t want to lug a camcorder with me. I was not disappointed. Though I have been a Canon user most of my days, it was not difficult to make the switch even given the brief time I had give myself to get familiar with the new camera. In many ways I found it to be more intuitive and user-friendly than the Canon. I returned only days ago from safari and on first viewing the pictures look great -- sharp, vibrant, great contrast -- even the phots taken late in the day and into the evening. As for the video, I am generally very pleased with the results. The only problem is that the lack of continuous AF in video mode meant that animals were walking in and out of focus, and I find that manually focusing while in live view is touchy at best. But that's a quibble. One issue that I encountered is that on at least 3 occasions during normal use, the camera would freeze up, with a flashing "ERR" message and [CHA] in the brackets. The only way to unfreeze the camera was essentially to reboot it by quickly removing and re-inserting the battery. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I will need to have it checked. Overall, I'm thrilled with the D90 and a new covert to Nikon.

I am a complete amateur with no desire to enter into the professional world. I just want to take great pics of my kids. I LOVE this camera!!!!! I use the auto setting and the pics are unbelievable. From the moment I picked it up out of the box (literally) it has surpassed all my expectations and I've captured some truly amazing shots. My point-and-shoot (canon sd1100 which I still keep in my purse for snapshots) maybe, maybe would have been fast enough to catch the same look on my kids faces, but the depth of field and color from the d90 are just breathtaking.
I'm sure if I learned to use all the settings I could do even more. And eventually I will, because it does seem pretty easy to navigate the menus and the buttons are all pretty clear. For now, I just wanted to move up to a higher image quality from the point-and-shoots, and the entry level DSLRs felt too plasticy and cheap for their price. This does not. It is still plastic, but feels solid, not like I could break it with too tight a grip.
The only real problem I had with it was the shoulder strap was ugly and uncomfortable. I found a really nice replacement strap at a camera store for about $15.
So if you are an amateur just looking for something better than what's available on the point-and-shoot market, this is a very useable, non-intimidating camera that will suit you needs.

I was going back and forth between the Nikon D90 and the 300. Obviously the 300 is a slightly more professional camera with a better frame, faster shutter, better autofocus, etc., but the D90 is so close to it and comes with a slightly better sensor and is $500 cheaper. Also, it has video. Now, before you stop reading because I mentioned that, let me make this statement. Video had nothing whatsoever to do with my decision. I had no interest in using a DSLR for video. But now that I've played with it, I think it is incredible. Now, it won't replace my camcorder but it will allow me to capture brief (<5 min) videos of things my child does that I would otherwise have to capture by switching physical cameras. The video quality if frankly amazing. The sound could be a little better, but is more than adequate. Now, on to the photography portion. The image quality between my D40x and the D90 is certainly noticeable. Pictures are clearer and more vibrant. All of the features that I used to have to access through the menu system (bracketing, image quality, burst mode, exposure, etc) are all available quickly using buttons and wheels on the camera. This is making a world of difference. The kit lens isn't the best by any stretch of the imagination but I have to be honest - it is better than I was expecting. I will try to post more as I continue to use it. But if you're considering moving up to a D90, DO IT!!! You won't regret it.

I purchased a D90 this weekend. I had used a D80 for over two years and loved it. The reason I purcahsed the D90 were as follows: Amazing clarity at 1600+ IS0. I live near Seattle and most of the days the sun is not out. I am an avid bird watcher (www.johnandcindi.blogspot.com)and need to bump up the ISO with my long lenses (Nikon 70-300MM VR, Tamron 200-500MM) to keep the shutter speed up. So far I LOVE this camera.

Coming from Canon point and shoot and seeing it's limitations, i finally decided to upgrade to dSLRs. I wanted an entry level camera at the same time will give me that room for me improve as i grow my photography skills. I narrowed my choice between Canon 50D and Nikon D90. Knowing that both are almost match with the 50D better on the spec sheet i went to a local camera shop and decide which one feels better in my hands. Being a Canon shooter it was hard for me to even look and try the Nikon but when i got my hands on the D90 everything changed. It felt better, not too big nor small, not too heavy or light and plasticy feel and it just feels better in my hands than the bulkier 50D. I really liked the control layout better, and the quick info button that i eventually remapped to my quick menu which enables me to change AF modes quickly and easily. The pictures are just amazing and i could switch between different picture controls i've set for people (nice skin tones) and to things (saturated, popping colors). The 4.3 fps or so speed is just perfect to capture my 1year old son and the 18-105 kit lens was just perfect zoom range for my needs. Again not too heavy. I also have 70-300VR lens for some telephoto shots. I've had my D90 now for almost 3 months and the new D5000 and Canon T1i that have come out and if i would have to redo it again i'd still go with the D90. The HD 720p video is ok and a nice to have feature for some quick video clips of my kids. Overall, this is a very nice and more than capable dSLR and is right in the sweet spot of beginner (D40, D5000) to pro cameras (D700 and even D3).

I'm a long time Canon shooter, about 20 years actually. I decided to go "to the dark side" a few months ago due to ongoing quality control problems w/ Canon. I recently purchased a D300, D90, Sigma 150 macro, Nikon 16-85 VR and Nikon 70-300 VR to replace my Canon 1D Mark II, 40D and assorted lenses. The D300 is by far the best camera I think I've ever used and the D90 is almost as good. While the D90 doesn't have the weather sealed build or AF system of the D300, it is still built very well and also has a nice accurate AF system. I'd say the D90 offers 80% of what the D300 does at a much better price point for most people. Even the kit lens for the D90 is better than I expected, though I do wish it had a metal mount instead of plastic. Nice job Nikon. The only thing I miss from the Canon line-up is their pro-quality F4L lineup (17-40, 24-105, 70-200) but the above mentioned Nikon consumer glass comes very very close to the quality of the Canon pro glass at a fraction of the cost so I'm not complaining.
I ordered both bodies and my lenses from Amazon. All were shipped very quickly even though I chose the free super-saver shipping. I've had problems w/ Amazon's warehouse shipping expensive camera gear in big boxes w/ little or no padding in the past and have returned several items shipped to me like that. I'm happy to say the last 3 or 4 things I've ordered from Amazon have come pretty well packaged which means they are paying attention to customer comments and feedback. The D90 I just received was in a big box but had plenty of bubble to keep it safe and secure during transport. Well done Amazon.
